Washington State Budget Cuts Deep

In the Washington PI article today (http://www.seattlepi.com/news/article/Wash-budget-deal-relies-on-massive-education-cuts-1393496.php) announcements were made about the 1.9% pay cut for teachers, elimination of K-4 class size reduction funds, and a declaration that make up funds would not be guaranteed in the future.

Perhaps worst of all, higher education tuition is about to explode. According to the article, "by 2013, a student at the University of Washington — where tuition will go up 16 percent each year — will pay double the costs of tuition than students did five years ago." What will become of a society where the access to higher education is so definitively set against the lower socioeconomic students? What becomes then of the American Dream?

We are devestating our state by making these cuts to public and higher education. Voters won't approve an increase in taxes, legislators won't approve cuts in their pay, but we take it out on the youth. The damage we do now can not and will not be undone.
