Outlines of ESEA's Future Emerging on Capitol Hill

Outlines of ESEA's Future Emerging on Capitol Hill

Under debate is the topic of drastically cutting federal funding to schools and for programs. Among these programs being recommended for complete scrap are literacy programs which includes the National Writing Project. This is one of several literacy programs that are being deemed "ineffective."

Ineffective when over 90% of teachers who participate in the NWP stay in the profession, when student writing scores for NWP teachers are higher than average. So, yeah I guess that's ineffective. By ineffective I mean not at all ineffective.

Secondly, they are discussing limiting funding to just the lowest 5 - 10% of schools. So, yeah there's another great idea. Go ahead and focus just on the low performing schools and then other schools will slip. Education funding shouldn't resemble circus plate spinning. We can't just spin one or two at a time and hope they'll all stay on the precipice. All plates need equal attention. Ignoring any of them is dangerous and unfair.
